Here’s a glimpse into the electrifying world of Athlos NYC, a groundbreaking women-only track meet that’s reshaping the landscape of athletics in New York City.
Athlos NYC: A Game-Changer in Women’s Track & Field
What Is Athlos?
Athlos is a high-profile, female-exclusive outdoor track and field meet, founded by Reddit co-founder and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian. The event premiered on September 26, 2024, at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island, NYC, with its name—derived from the Greek word for “contest” or “athlete”—capturing the spirit of excellence and competition
What's Unique?
All-women, all-track: The inaugural program featured six races—100m, 100m hurdles, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m—showcasing elite female talent with no field events included
Star-studded lineup: Athletic luminaries participated, including Gabby Thomas, Faith Kipyegon, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, Marileidy Paulino, Brittany Brown, and more
Spectacle Meets Sport
Athlos redefined the spectator experience with concert-style production. The meet blended live performance with athletics—DJ D-Nice set the tone, and Megan Thee Stallion capped off the evening with a live show. From pyrotechnics and light-up bracelets to custom Tiffany & Co. crowns and VIP glam experiences, fans were immersed in something more than just racing
Why It Matters
Rewriting the Economics of the Sport
Historic prize money: Each race winner took home a staggering $60,000, with descending payouts ranging down to $2,500 for sixth place—totaling over $500,000 in prize distribution. Winners also received custom crowns
Revenue-sharing model: Athlos pledged to redistribute 10% of ticket, sponsorship, and broadcast revenues directly to the athletes
Influence on the industry: This bold financial model pressured the Diamond League to boost its prize money across events, with increases planned for both meet and final payouts
Roots in Athlete-Centered Vision
Ohanian aimed to address the lack of consistent visibility for women’s sports—particularly post-Olympics—by creating a stand-alone platform that truly centers female athletes. Athletes raved about the VIP attention—including custom bibs, personalized gift bags, glam services, and input on event design.
2025 Event
Athlos returns on October 10, 2025, once again at Icahn Stadium. The 2025 edition promises to be bigger and bolder, with a new addition: long jump added to the roster of events.
Confirmed athlete commitments include Gabby Thomas, Masai Russell, Marileidy Paulino, and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, reaffirming the event’s pull.
